Tulips + garlic vs. deer

Tulips protected from curious deer by interplanted garlic. Sharon B. photo

SGC member Sharon B. shares an experiment she did last fall for growing tulips.

“I alternated planting rows of tulip bulbs with rows of garlic, and the deer didn’t touch the tulips! I initially thought it was because I had laid old zinnia stalks across the tulips as they grew (see photos); I had totally forgotten about the garlic I had planted. It was when I was digging up the tulips after they finished flowering that the penny dropped!”
