Keep Houseplants Alive While You’re Away: The String Drip Watering System

Heading out of town for awhile? Here’s a handy solution to keep your plants watered while you’re away:

  1. Water your plant well.

  2. Cut a piece of cotton string long enough to go from the bottom of your water container into the soil of the plant. The string must be 100% cotton.

  3. Use a paper clip to hold one end of the string in the bottom of the container. Metal will rust, so a plastic-coated clip is better.

  4. Poke the other end of the string about 3” deep into the soil of the plant.

  5. Fill the container with water. Four litres will last approximately one week, so choose your container accordingly.

  6. Locate the filled container so that it sits above the top of the plant. This way gravity will help pull water down to the soil.

Note: Make sure the string is out of direct sunlight. Otherwise, it will dry out before the water gets to the plant.
