Local fungi in the Sooke Hills

Autum is ideal time for mushroom picking. Hiking the trails and hills around Sooke and surrounding areas, you will come across beautiful fungi attached to trees, in the underbrush, and along fallen logs. It’s remarkable how they grow, all the many varieties,

bright colors, but unlike flowers its best to be educated on what to pick to consume as there are a lot of look-alikes. Steve Smith is a local resident, proud father of five, grandfather of eleven and a great grandfather of one. Decades ago, Steve developed an interest in foraging wild edible plants and fungi, turning it into a supplemental income by picking mushrooms and salal.

Steve will demonstrate some of the local edible wild fungi as well as a variety of fungi that grows well in the garden. Sharing some of the interrelationships between fungi and plant life. He plans to have some fresh picked samples to show the garden club.

If you are a SGC member or new to Sooke, join the Sooke Garden Club on Wednesday, October 22nd at 7:00 pm at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. If you would like to become a member, you can join here or sign up at the meeting.
